• Have a plan in your head. We’re not saying you should treat this as a job interview, but it wouldn’t hurt to have a “diagram” of the flow of conversation you think is ideal. IN that diagram, have back up plans. If you start by asking her if she likes a certain book, for example, have a clear idea of how you would respond when she says “yes” and when she says “no.” The trick is to keep the conversation flowing.

• Ask open-ended questions. You want her to elaborate on her reply, not just say something monosyllabic and then walk away. Phrase your questions correctly. Instead of saying “Do you like this movie?,” try “How did you find this movie?” The first question is answerable by a yes or no (and then that’s it), but the second one forces her to explain herself.

• Stay away from sensitive topics. Never start an overt sex talk, for example, or she might slap you. All women want to be respected, after all. Also, stay away from political topics, social problems such as poverty or immigration, and of course, don’t bring up religion. You can talk about all these topics eventually, but not in the first or second date, for sure. For now, keep it light. Enjoy the process of getting to know her.
